Mitchell Welch has been publishing creative work in Australian literary journals for over ten years, including Antipodes, Arena Magazine, The Australian Poetry Journal, Cordite, Meanjin, The Medical Journal of Australia, Overland, Rabbit, Southerly and Text.

He volunteered as an editorial assistant for Overland from 2015-21, contributing poems, reviews and guest-editing an online poetry feature in 2019. He was an editorial committee member for N-Scribe from 2014-17, and was poetry editor of Ricochet from 2013-14. In 2015-16 he wrote and recorded Modern Cons, a short fiction podcast for ABC Radio National.

He was the inaugural winner of the Fair Australia Prize for Poetry in 2015, and has been long-listed, short-listed and/or highly commended for a number of awards including the ACU Poetry Prize, WB Yeats Poetry Prize for Australia, Judith Wright Poetry Prize and University of Canberra Vice Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize.

In 2022 his work was shortlisted for the Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Prize for Poetry.
